The Salford City Council plans to develop a five-mile route along the Irwell River. This new route will provide a continuous connection for pedestrians and cyclists from Salford Quays to the city center. The project is an updated version of the Irwell Park strategy, launched in 2008, and will be open for public feedback. Once completed, the project will create a green corridor extending to Peel Park, bringing an ecological touch to the city. The aim is also to create an area that is resilient to climate change.

In recent years, various developments have been made, such as the construction of the Aviva Studios pedestrian bridge and the improvement of connections between Spinningfields and New Bailey. However, the path along the Irwell River still remains disconnected in some areas. With this project, the goal is to complete an uninterrupted pedestrian and cycling route from Salford Quays to Manchester city center.

Salford City Council values public participation in this project and is eager to hear feedback. Mike McCusker, the council's Planning, Transport, and Sustainable Development officer, emphasizes the importance of creating a safe and accessible environment, while also highlighting the project's goal to contribute to the growth of nature and create spaces that are resilient to climate change.

This project will not only improve transportation but also aims to create a sustainable, nature-friendly public space. Therefore, public involvement is crucial.

The Irwell River Park project represents a significant step in Salford's sustainable urban development. The project aims to offer city residents a healthier lifestyle, while also protecting nature and creating a structure that can withstand the challenges of climate change. The city council aims to approve the finalized plan by early 2025.
